Taking a blog leap into running

What is a “blog leap,” you say? A “blog leap” is posting something on your blog, thus committing yourself.

I’m going to start running again.

There. I did it.

I used to run at least three times a week. I used to be able to run 10 miles. But I haven’t gone running regularly since last summer, and I’ll be lucky if I can make it two miles at the state I’m in.

Hiking once a week has been great for maintaining my health and strength, but running is a completely different animal, one that I miss.

If you’re in the same boat — or a similar one — consider joining me in my running routine. I’m starting with running three times a week (making sure to stretch before and after). I’ll be outside (I hate treadmills) and I’ll be meandering around the Bangor area, trying to find good routes. I’m not going to set any time goals or distance goals until I know what I’m dealing with. I used to set song goals, which is much more fun. I create a playlist on my iPod and when I get half way through the playlist, I turn around. It’s better than looking at numbers.

Reasons to join me in running this summer:

• I’m not competitive. So running is a good sport for me. I enjoy personal goals. But running is good for competitive people, too, because of the many races planned throughout the state.

• Running makes me feel better mentally, and I’m confident it will for you, too. Some people like to call this the “runner’s high.” In general, physical activity is a de-stressor. Running is just a fast de-stressor. 🙂

• You get to wear neon shoes without people making fun of you.

• It doesn’t cost a lot to get started. You need sneakers and some comfy workout clothing. I like to get workout clothing at T.J. Maxx and Target. I’m looking for inexpensive and not cotton.

• You might not always have the ability to run. I feel fortunate that I don’t have any leg or foot problems at this time in my life that prevent me from running. For those who do have leg injuries, consider paddling or biking (for some) this summer.

• Running will improve your physical health in many ways. For more information about the benefits of running, visit sports.yahoo.com/top/news?slug=ycn-8418601.

Clearly I’m a casual runner if I measure my distance by rap and pop songs on my MP3 player. For me, it isn’t about distance, races (though I admire racers) or speed. It’s about my health and enjoyment, as is my hiking endeavors.

If you have any suggestions for nice places to run, whether it’s on a long stretch of sidewalk or on woodland trails, please post in the comments below. I’ll usually be in the Bangor area because of my work at the BDN.
