Join Bangor’s annual streamside cleanup this Saturday

Bangor area residents are banding together 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 1, to clean litter from area brooks and streams. The annual Streamside Cleanup will begin at the Bangor Parks & Recreation Center, located at 647 Main Street, and teams of volunteers will head to clean up areas from there.

Deputy Brewer Mayor Kevin O’Connell holds up an old discarded Howard Johnsons cola can- one of many trash items he and others removed from an area along the Sedgeunkedunk Stream in Brewer Saturday morning, May 12,2012. Over the years, scores of local volunteers have removed tons of garbage and debris in areas along the Penobscot River.

Organizers are asking for volunteers to help cleaning the areas draining into Arctic Brook, Capehart Brook, Meadow Brook and the Penjajawoc Stream. They also need help cleaning roadside ditches surrounding Birch Stream, Sucker Brook, Shaw Brook, Kenduskeag Stream and the Penobscot River.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome. Come by yourself or bring a team. Gloves, bags, safety vests, water and T-shirts will be provided. The annual event, hosted by the City of Bangor and the Bangor Area Stormwater Group, is rain or shine; dress accordingly.

Maps of the stream coverage area will be provided to team leaders the day of the event. We ask that team leaders arrive no later than 8:30 am.

The Bangor Area Stormwater Group is also holding Streamside Cleanups in the neighboring communities. For a complete listing of other cleanup dates or to sign up for an “anytime streamside cleanup” visit www.baswg.org.
