If you haven’t already heard, “Governor Baxter Day: Bangor to Katahdin” and
“Top of Bangor Tour” will be held on July 24 in Bangor!
The day will be filled with activities celebrating connections between the City of Bangor, Baxter State Park and the Katahdin region. And in participating, you will be supporting the Plants of Baxter State Park Project, an effort to create the first ever full inventory and field guide of the park’s plants.
July 24 might seem far away, but a big part of the event is a photography contest, and submission deadlines are approaching! So, here are the details:
The photo contest has three categories — Wild Bangor, Native Maine Plants and Baxter State Park — and is open to all. Entry fee is $20. You can deliver or send up to three frames photos to Epic Sports at 6 Central Street in Bangor. Deliveries will be accepted July 5-11. For contest guidelines, visit www.friendsofbaxter.org/pdf/InfoPhotographers52513.pdf. Snag an entry form at www.friendsofbaxter.org/pdf/PHOTOCONTEST.pdf.
The exhibit will be on display at Epic Sports from July 13 to 23. All photos will be for sale, 50 percent of selling price going to the photographer and 50 percent to support the Plants of Baxter State Park project. Winning photos will be announced on July 24 the “Top of Bangor Tour” at 51 Thomas Hill Road in Bangor. There will be cash prizes in each category. Photos still available will be sold at live auction during the reception.
Whether you consider yourself professional photographer or a complete amateur, I don’t think it matters. I know a lot of people who’ve have taken some amazing photos of the park and of Bangor. The categories are fairly broad, so dig into your archives and pick something out! It may sound cheesy, but everyone has a unique perspective. I look forward to the exhibit and seeing how different people view Bangor, Baxter and our native plants.
I will be blogging more about “Governor Baxter Day” as we get closer to the big day. To check out the lineup of activities for the big day, visit www.friendsofbaxter.org/pdf/BaxterDayInformation5_14_13.pdf.
