Both the Piscataquis and Machias river races have been postponed for a variety of reasons, according to Maine Canoe and Kayak Racing Organization (MaCKRO).

The 43rd Annual Kiwanis Piscataquis River Race, originally scheduled for Saturday, April 25, was postponed due to “poor weather and high water,” Kiwanis states on their website. The race will now be running on Saturday, May 30. The decision was made by the race committee at their final preparation meeting on April 21.

“This is only the second time in the 43-year history of our race that it has not run on the last Saturday of April,” Kiwanis states on their website.

The Machias River Race, which was originally scheduled for Sunday, April 26, has been postponed because the race’s starting point, First Machias Lake, is iced in, and the campground road to the race’s end point, Airline Campground, is still buried in snow, according to MaCKRO. The race is now scheduled for Sunday, May 17.

“The water level will be low enough by the 17th to make this race ideal for newbies,” MaCKRO official Jeff Owen posted on the organization’s website forum.
