Where in the Maine woods am I? Holbrook Island Sanctuary State Park

Scott Bennett and Leslie Gordon Curtis won the “Where in the Woods am I?” game for Holbrook Island Sanctuary State Park in Brooksville in February 2016, given the following clues and photo gallery:

I have mixed feelings about the recent weather. On one hand, I’m saving a lot of money in heating fuel and plowing this winter. On the other hand, the lack of snow and ice is putting a damper on winter sports and festivities throughout the state. Ski mountains in Maine are suffering. Cross-country ski centers, too. And some winter events are being postponed or canceled due to the warm weather and lack of snow cover.

In an effort to embrace the good things about the unseasonably warm weather, I headed outdoors for a snow-free hike last Thursday, Feb. 4, on the coast, where the temperature reached above 50 degrees Fahrenheit mid day (which is pretty much unheard of this time of year in Maine). The mossy forest was beautiful and quiet, and while hiking, I worked up enough body heat to be comfortable in just a T-shirt and thin ski pants. My dog, Oreo, also seemed to enjoy the mild weather that day.

See if you recognize where Oreo and I hiked by viewing the photo gallery below. If it looks like two different trails — it is! But both trails are a part of the same trail network. Leave your best guesses in the comment section at the bottom of the page. Winner gets an internet high five and a mention in the updated post. And as always, stay tuned for tomorrow’s “1-minute hike” video and writeup about the property. I’m especially excited to share this outdoor spot with you.
