Where in the Maine woods am I? Frye Mountain

Mary Wright Neil Stinson, Bridget Wright, Sandie “Bluebearee” Sabaka and Scott Bennett won the “Where in the Woods am I?” game for Frye Mountain in February of 2016 given the following clues and photo gallery from the hike:

I usually choose to fairly short hiking trails to explore during the winter because the days are so short and the temperature drops quickly when the sun sets. Plus, Maine is usually covered in a deep layer of snow during the winter, which slows down my hiking pace quite a bit, even if I’m using snowshoes. But this winter has been different. There is hardly any snow on the ground right now, in the middle of February, and the temperature is keeping us all on our toes. One day it’s freezing, the next it’s unusually warm. It has made planning outdoor activities challenging, but not impossible.

Last Friday, I decided to try a fairly long hike (for the season) because of the scant snowcover and warm temperatures. It was a sunny day, and as I drove to the trailhead with my dog, Oreo, I noticed that there was barely any snow left on the fields. So I left my snowshoes in the car and hit the trail.

To my surprise, I did run into quite a bit of snow. Deep in the shaded areas of the forest, the snow actually reached just below my knee. Oreo and I hiked about 6 miles that day, and it was quite a workout. We finished our hike just as the sun was setting.

See if you recognize the Maine trail we hiked by viewing the photo gallery below. Winner gets an internet high five and a mention in the updated post. And as always, if this hike interests you, stay tuned for tomorrow’s “1-minute hike” video and writeup, which includes directions on how to get there and important information about the trail.
