I go through phases with photography, and the recent story I wrote about Maine spiders directed my focus to the smaller things in nature. You know, bugs and stuff. Recently I photographed a few insects while walking my dog and visiting family, and I was pleasantly surprised by the results. With my Cannon Rebel T5i and the lens it comes with (18-135 mm), I was able to capture more detail than I anticipated. The only tough part is that you have to get pretty close to the insects to get this detail. It’s not such a big deal when it comes to things like lady bugs and Japanese beetles, but bees and wasps are pretty skittish, and butterflies are nearly impossible! I hope you enjoy these photos, all taken in the Bangor, Maine, area. I’m sure I’ll be posting more insect photos soon! Feel free to leave comments at the bottom of the page if you know much about macro photography or the insects shown in these photos.
